The city known as “The City of Bridges”. It is located approximately 110km from Havana and 55 km from Varadero, one of the largest resorts on the island. Sites to visit:
♦ Cathedral of San Carlos Borromeo. The original church was made from the leaves of the Royal Palm (our national tree) that was destroyed by a storm. Shortly after its began the construction of the current cathedral, which was finished in 1735, but it was not completely ready including all the facilities until 1750.
♦Teatro Sauto. With an architectural splendour worthy of admire and very rich in history.
♦ Castle of San Severino. First and most important building in the city, built during the XVI and XVII centuries.
♦ Pharmaceutical Museum of Matanzas “Triolet”. Opened in 1882. First Latin American pharmaceutical Museum, retaining all its original furniture, in addition to being the only French pharmacy from the end of the nineteenth century that exists in the World.
♦ Bellamar Caves. In its interior you can appreciate the effect of time in their beautiful stalactites, stalagmites and other formations. The galleries and passages of these caves began to be formed 30 million years ago.
♦ Saturno Cave. It is a flooded cave in water with about 20 meters of depth adorned by spectacular stalactites and stalagmites that years and erosion have carved with remarkable beauty, which has been adapted for easy access to experience the unparalleled sensation of being immersed in their fresh and clean waters.
♦Ciénaga de Zapata. Nature, virgin forests, vegetation of marshes and swamps, mangroves, beautiful beaches without contamination. Here you will find the “Boca of Guamá”, several restaurants, 2 of them specialized in crocodile meat, “The Crocodile Farm” and the entrance of the access channel to the “Laguna del Tesoro” (natural lake surrounded by virgin vegetation). In the middle of this lake you will find “Guamá” resort built on stilts inside the lagoon and joined by bridges, located just to the side of the replica of a “Taíno Village” (former aboriginal Cubans settlers) in which can be seen, next to the huts of guano, numerous sculptures made to natural size of aborigens doing various daily tasks.
♦Playa Larga (Long Beach). Beautiful beach with magnificent barrier reef and beautiful seabed suitable for diving.
♦ Playa Girón (Girón Beach). His name is in commemoration to the pirate of French origin Gilbert Girón that sought refuge in the area by the XVII century. Beach with spectacular seabed suitable for diving.
♦ La Cueva de los Peces (Cave of the fishes). Located between “Playa Larga” and “Playa Girón”, is a sort of cenote with crystal clear and deep waters, populated with infinite variety of fish.
♦Playa Coral (Coral Beach). Coral Beach you find it about 15 kilometers west of Varadero on the road to Matanzas, in which you'll find a great variety of fish and corals. An special site for diving.
♦Bacunayagua's viewer. Tallest Bridge of Cuba with a stunning view where you can also enjoy a tasty “Piña Colada”.
